New Milford River Trail
Walking, jogging, biking, putting & picnicing. . . these are just a
few of the possibilities that could be offered throughout the proposed New
Milford River Trail – all alongside the beautiful Housatonic River.
The proposed New Milford River Trail will
provide transportation and recreational benefits to pedestrian and cyclists.
The
Trail can potentially follow the Housatonic River through New Milford and will
provide bicycle and pedestrian access from Gaylordsville to the Lover’s Leap
State Park.

The next major goal for the Association
is to develop our business plan. Once that is
completed, we can begin to think about land.
Immediately following that, we aim to
hire a professional to develop a feasibility study for the project. |

The Association is aiming
to visit as many Recreation Centers as possible over the next year.
Our first site visit was to the
Ridgefield Recreation Center. The Ridgefield
facility is 60,000 sq ft. It encompasses a pool,
gymnasium, wellness center, fitness / dance rooms, function rooms as
well as the headquarters for Parks and Rec. The
senior center is a separate building, which was privately donated to the
town. Their administration was extremely
helpful, and allowed us to write a comprehensive site analysis for
reference. |

The Association is aiming to connect
with all New Milford organizations. We want to
involve all areas of the community, to ensure this project will most
accurately meet the needs of New Milford. As
well as speaking with organizations, we are in contact with the local
government and many local businesses.
It is not our intent to compete with
local businesses. Rather, we aim to work in
conjunction with them to compliment their services / programs.
We are also developing our database of
interested individuals to create an advocacy campaign. We
are always looking to expand that list. |

We worked side-by-side with the New Milford Parks and Recreation
department to help raise funds for the rebuilding of the Creative
Playground on Pickett District Road.
The 'Pennies-for-the-Playground' Campaign inspired many of our friends, neighbors and families to put aside loose change (and a little folding money) for our children. A movie night, softball tournament and other community engagements also helped to bring our town together and invest in our families' recreation and help us engage with local business and organizations. Together we raised over $68000 and with a generous donation from an anonymous benefactor, the new playground became a reality towards the end of 2009. We can't thank the people and business of New Milford enough for their generosity throughout this project.

Right now, the
organization is focusing on raising awareness and garnishing support for
the Recreation Center. We have developed a
survey to ascertain what the needs of the New Milford community are, to
further define our objectives. If we decide to
pursue a land donation from the town, we will begin a petition drive to
present to the town council – aiming for over 5,000 signatures from
registered New Milford voters (the New Milford population is currently
approximately 29,000 people).
